Commercials for Women’s Hygiene: Ladies, we all have…. *whispers* Vaginas. They’re dirty and bad and we have to whisper about them because they’re disgusting secrets.
Commercial for Men’s Erectile issues: Hey Men! Wanna get hard and can’t get hard? Like bein’ hard but aren’t hard enough? Want everyone to know how big and hard you are? Buy our shit and be hard, because your genitals are fucking AWESOME!
This is true that there is a dichotomy related to how the media presents tampons/pad commercials vs. erectile dysfunction commercials. But please remember that erectile dysfunction commercials are not “men’s erectile issues,” as women and non-binary people can also have penises, and pad/tampon commercials are not “women’s hygiene” issues, as men and non-binary people can also have periods. This doesn’t negate the sexism behind the differences between these types of commercials, as our society is also very cis-centric and therefore associates vaginas with women, and penises with men, and this factors into the way such commercials are presented, definitely. But it is important not to further cissexism when criticizing the sexist motivations of these commercials. Also, women with penises also are shamed for their genitals, so that’s something important to remember as well.
